MIGRAINE HEADACHE
Chronic #migraines are headaches that typically are accompanied with:
Visual symptoms like light sensitivity, flashing lights, tunnel vision, or black spots
Sound sensitivity
Nausea / sometimes vomiting
CAUSES:
The most common cause of migraines are the spinal misalignments (subluxations) of the upper cervical spine.
- C1-atlas
- C2-axis
- Or both.
These vertebrae encase the brain stem (upper spinal cord) which include all the cranial nerves I – XII. Cranial nerve II (optic nerve) when pinched causes visual disturbances associated with migraines.
The sympathetic nervous system (autonomic) when involved can cause digestive symptoms like nauseas/vomiting
Other causes can be:
- Brain tumor / cyst.
- Brain stem tumor / cyst
CT –Scan or mechanic resonance Imaging (MRI) are the preferred test to identify these much less common causes
Common Mechanisms of injury:
- Hyperflexion / hyperextension of head or neck
- Slip and Fall
- Sports injury
- Trauma (concussion)
TREATMENT
Chiropractic spinal adjustments to upper cervical spine C1/C2 (Atlas/Axis) vertebras not only are effective or immediate headache relief but also when performed over a brief period of time will realign these joints to correct the cause of symptoms.Over the counter or prescribed drugs such as nsaids, Imitrex, Phenergan are usually effective for a temporary relief of a migraine occurance, but will not prevent future episodes.
